Project Description
The Armstrong Creek Community Centre combines community space, childcare and Preschool. Our design from 2017 covered the Public Open Spaces, as well as playspaces. We completed the Concept Design, Town Planning drawings and Tender Documents as well as assisted with Construction support. The Childcare Playspace provides a variety of open ended play opportunities. The babies and younger toddlers have an informally divided area away from the main playspace. The main playspace features swings, pebble play, bark Softfall, natural and synthetic turf areas, a large sandpit, digging areas, misting and water play areas, kids sheds, storage sheds, loose parts and lush and varied vegetation. A large productive area is located centrally, but can be fenced with gates. Animals can be kept in this area and the idea is to allow visibility into area even if the gates are closed via at least 3 different viewing points. To the east of the productive area is a large sandpit. This sandpit has an adjacent abstract boat area. The sandpit is partially covered by a shade structure which has vegetation growing on it. Located in the centre of the sandpit are tubs for loose parts such as pipes, rakes etc. Again the concept behind this is that children can help themselves to items required. The Preschool Playspace provides a variety of areas suitable for older children play. It provides a rich environment with a diverse range of open ended play opportunities. Many items are similar to those provided in the Childcare playspace, but as some children may attend both preschool and childcare they have different characteristics and materials. Large paved areas under cover have been left open for small tables and chairs, Art activities etc. The landscape provides both wide open areas and enclosed smaller areas. There are hidden or surprise elements waiting for the children to discover. The layout encourages exploration and discovery. The public open space areas surround the carpark and consist of areas with picnic tables, lawns and bike paths.
